What is Bowen therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle and calming healing therapy that is very effective at reducing tension and pain patterns in the body. It consists of sequences of rolling movements of the practitioner’s thumbs or fingers over muscles along the spine and other structures beneath the skin (tendons, ligaments, joints, nerve bundles, and fascia). These gentle moves soften and relax areas of tension in the body, which then allows joints and muscles to move freer without pain. This treatment was developed in Australia and has been used all over the world.

This is not a deep tissue massage and the therapist will not force the muscle. The gentle pressure activates deep physiologic responses, improving your body’s ability to heal itself. Applying a light rolling movement over a muscle will help the tissue to heal faster than tissue that is deeply stimulated. Additionally, this produces a whole-body response such that people often feel very relaxed following Bowenwork therapy.

What does Bowen therapy provide?

The Bowen method was created to help people regain energy within the muscles and promote relaxation in movement. When the body is overworked the tissues need cell stimulation to begin repairing and boosting other systems like the immune system to increase activity. Bowen Therapy is much-needed stimulation of the muscles and can provide comfort with problem areas all over the body. We suggest beginning your massage therapy with the Bowen massage.

Effect of Gentle Pressure on the Body

Everything is Connected

Our approach begins with an awareness that a problem or pain in one area of the body might actually be related to a dysfunction in another part of the body. For example, that neck pain you thought was caused by how you suddenly turned your head might have its root cause in an uneven plevis (hip). Therefore, in addition to addressing your neck, we would also work the muscles around the pelvis.

You Are One in a Billion

No two people are alike, and even if both report pain in the same area, each body processes injury very uniquely. Therefore, in order to give you the best treatment with the best possible outcome, you’ll be asked for a health history including past injuries or life events which may have an influence on your current pain issue.

Recent injury

Bowenwork often has its most dramatic effects in very new injuries. If you’ve suffered a concussion, sprain, or other acute injury, Bowenwork is gentle, safe and will help your body to heal the injury.

Chronic Problems

Bowenwork will assist the body in recovering its healthy balance even in chronic situations, such as fibromyalgia, low back and hip pain, and old injuries. Some problems may take more time to respond as the body works to change an unhealthy pattern to a new healthy one.

This is a comforting treatment for athletes and those experiencing neck pain, chronic headaches and other problem areas of the body. Schedule your Bowen Therapy session with our certified therapist today at Windward Medispa.
