Spider veins have traditionally been treated using a proven injectable procedure known as sclerotherapy. However, a new laser procedure has arrived that may be a more effective and less invasive option for many patients. Excel V is a laser that successfully eradicates superficial veins using one of the longest pulses available in these devices today. The Excel V is now available at Windward Vein to provide our patients another safe, effective option in spider vein treatment.
The Lowdown on the Excel V
The Excel V uses a high-power green laser that targets blood vessels just underneath the skin’s surface. The laser energy heats and coagulates the vein, causing it to seal closed and collapse. The treated vessel is absorbed by the body over time and blood naturally reroutes to healthy veins nearby. Some patients see their visible vessels disappear during their very first treatment session.
One of the best features of the Excel V is the ability to tailor the length of the laser to the unique needs of each of our patients. This means that we can address spider veins on the legs, as well as those that sometimes appear on the face. With the option to make changes during the procedure, our patients get the best possible treatment and outcome for their visible veins today.
Treatment Options
While the Excel V is a superior option in spider vein treatment, those vein networks are not the only concerns that can be eliminated through this device. The green laser works on nearly any blemish that is blue, red, purple or brown, which include:
- Spider veins and telangiectasia
- Other types of vascular lesions
- Cherry angiomas
- Port wine stains and other birthmarks
- Brown spots and freckles
Dr. Wong will evaluate your specific condition and discuss your desired results to determine whether Excel V is the right treatment option for you.
Benefits of Excel V over Sclerotherapy
For the right patient, Excel V offers a number of potential benefits over sclerotherapy:
- No needle punctures during the procedure
- Preferred choice for patients with needle-phobia
- Works on veins too small for sclerotherapy injections
- Quicker results for some patients
Excel V is best used on small superficial vein networks. This is not an optimal procedure for larger varicose veins or for patients where venous reflux is suspected to be present in the deeper veins of the leg.
Procedure Expectations
Excel V treatments do not require any type of anesthesia or topical anesthetic prior to the procedure. The laser energy is delivered via a small hand piece that is able to target the blood inside the vessel without damaging surrounding skin and tissue. Patients report a mild stinging sensation as the laser energy reaches the vessel, but most find the treatment to be very tolerable.
After the procedure, patients are usually able to return to regular activities the same day or the day after. There may be mild swelling or redness in the treatment area, but this will disappear in a matter of days. Patients will be advised to remain out of the sun and avoid hot tubs for a few days to ensure the treatment area has time to fully heal.
Results You can Count On
The Excel V offers consistent results when used to eliminate spider veins. Because the veins are completely destroyed, the results are considered permanent. However, new veins can form over time and may require additional treatment.
