Are your varicose veins getting in the way of your style? Or worse, are your veins causing pain that is getting in the way of your life? If you are suffering from vein problems, such as spider veins, varicose veins or venous disease, you are not alone.
Varicose veins are very common, with more than three million cases being diagnosed in the United States every year. Varicose veins form in the layer of fat between the muscle and skin. As we age or experience hormone changes, the valves in our leg veins weaken, and may allow blood to leak backward. When the blood pools like that, it can cause the veins to dilate and bulge.
If left untreated, varicose veins may worsen over time. The good news is that varicose veins are usually harmless, but there are cases where they can cause physical discomfort. If you are looking for a treatment to disguise your veins or ease troublesome symptoms, Windward Medispa in Oahu has the solution for you with the latest treatments you probably haven’t even heard of!
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are gnarled enlarged veins. Any vein may become varicose, but the veins most commonly affected are those in your legs and feet. That is because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of your lower body.
For many people, varicose veins and spider veins — a common, mild variation of varicose veins — are simply a cosmetic concern. For others, varicose veins can cause aching pain and discomfort. Sometimes varicose veins lead to more serious problems.
Treatment at Windward Medispa
Our state of the art Vein Center was developed to offer an extensive collection of cutting edge treatments to aid in the betterment of venous disorders affecting the legs such as reticular, varicose, and spider veins.
All of our patients receive highly individualized yet comprehensive care with two main objectives: the treatment method used should involve little to no pain and it should be compatible with busy lifestyles.
We offer a variety of treatments including Laser Ablation, ClariVein and Phlebectomy among others for the treatment of varicose veins.
Varicose Laser Ablation Treatment
Our laser or radiofrequency ablation treatment is recommended to individuals both looking for a cosmetic fix or those looking to alleviate the pain associated with enlarged veins.
How Does It Work? The laser ablation procedures use laser heat energy to cauterize the enlarged veins while radio frequency uses waves similar to a microwave oven. This action closes the vein in the affected region so that blood cannot flow backward and pool – which is the cause of a varicose vein. Instead, the blood is diverted back to the heart through the deep venous system.
The procedure is virtually painless because the area is numbed with a diluted lidocaine solution to avoid any uncomfortable sensation. Once the treatment is completed, the legs are wrapped for a day followed by two weeks of wearing compression stockings.
ClariVein
ClariVein is a form of endovenous therapy that introduces the treatment device (a very thin flexible wire-type catheter) into the vein itself. ClariVein is unlike Endovenous RF or EV Laser – both of which use heat. Since there is no heat involved, there is no need for lidocaine. Aside from the initial injection of numbing for the entry location, the treatment is not painful.
How Does It Work? The tiny hollow wire performs two functions – one is to disturb the inside lining of the vein, and the other is to deliver the sclerosant solution.
The mechanical action (rotation) of the thin catheter tip causes the vein to collapse. At the same time, the chemical is introduced to close up the vein.
Phlebectomy
Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small scalpel or needle to remove varicose veins on the surface of the leg; it is often the best option for cosmetic results. Phlebectomy is highly successful when performed in patients who are suitable candidates.
How Does It Work? The procedure begins by first marking the veins with a pen in the standing position. A local anesthetic known as tumescent is then used to numb the area before very small incisions are made to fully remove the affected vein and or veins.
This procedure may sound invasive, but the incisions are so insignificant that stitches are not necessary. After the procedure, your legs will be wrapped with a snug yet comfortable compression wrap which can be removed the next day. Just one day after the procedure you are fully capable of resuming your usual routine, though strenuous activities should be slowly reintroduced.
