Spring is here, and while the weather is basically beach-ready year round here in Kailua, there is something extra sweet about springtime on the beach. The longer days and the fresh new season make now a great time to try new, healthy things—like beach yoga. Our wellness experts at Windward Vein, Heart and Medispa love beach yoga because it’s relaxing, good for the mind, body and spirit, and anyone can do it. Read on for our favorite yoga tips for the next time you have a beachy afternoon.
DE-STRESS
Before you start, spend a few minutes in a seated position just simply breathing. This can help you let go of the stress of your day and get into a peaceful mental state, which can do wonders for your overall wellbeing, including your heart health. Try sitting with good posture, a straight spine and relaxed shoulders. If your mind wonders, that’s okay! You can always count your breath or watch the ocean to help clear your head.
MOVE YOUR BODY
After you have centered yourself, start with some simple yoga poses to warm up and do what feels right for you. Our favorites for the beach are:
• Downward facing dog—alternate bending your knees for extra stretching here!
• Seated twists—this especially feels great after a long day at a desk.
• Gentle forward folds with the knees slightly bent—this will stretch out your legs and lower back.
• Neck rolls—this will release tension from looking at a screen all day.
There is no wrong way to stretch on the beach, as long as you are staying safe with your movements and listening to your body. Start small and set a timer on your phone for 15 minutes and go from there. Afterwards, we bet you’ll feel refreshed and renewed thanks to healing combination of salty ocean air, deep breathing and gentle stretches. Namaste!
