One of the first signs of aging does not necessarily always show up in the face, but
rather in the hands. Prominent veins can make your hands look substantially older.
They can develop anywhere in the body, but they may cause significant concern to both
men and women.
The underlying cause of the prominence of the hand veins is aging and loss of volume
(fat) between the bones in the hand. As we age, our skin continues to lose elasticity and
volume; this results in the lumpy, unattractive veins at the skin’s surface. The hands
also receive a lot of sun exposure throughout our lifetime; this greatly affects the skin
and makes the damage appear to be more prominent.
If the bulging veins on your hands are bothering you, it is safe to treat them and rid the
hands of their presence. Veins on the surface can be safely removed or injected and
destroyed.
What Causes Prominent Veins on the Hand?
Prominent or “bulging” veins can have a variety of causes. These cases are rarely
serious and usually benign.
Benign Cause of Prominent Veins:
• Low Body Fat – One of the main causes of prominent veins bulging under the
skin is because there is little body fat. Another cause could be due to weight
lifting.
• Age and Genetics – As you get older, it is not unusual for the veins in your hands
to become more visible; this could be due to skin pigmentation, body fat
distribution or a variety of other genetic factors.
Serious Causes of Prominent Veins
• Vascular Disease – There are different types of vascular disease that are
characterized by malfunctions in the blood vessels, this leads to obstruction of
the flow of blood.
What Causes Vascular Disease?
Vascular disease has several causes including:
• Injury to the blood vessels.
• Age.
• Other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
• Smoking.
• Physical Injury.
Symptoms of Vascular Disease
In addition to bulging veins, people with vascular disease could experience:
• Heavy feeling in the limbs.
• Changes in the skin of your hands such a discoloration.
• Wounds that won’t heal.
• Pain and reduced mobility.
How Do You Treat Prominent Hand Veins?
Before performing any procedure at Windward Medispa, we will first conduct preliminary
assessments to ensure that there are no blocked veins in the shoulder region, which
may be the cause of bulging veins. If all is well, prominent veins in the hands will then
be treated using a foam sclerotherapy injection technique.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a procedure designed to eliminate varicose and spider veins.
Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a sotradecol solution directly into the vein. The
solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and
the blood to clot. In time, your body will then destroy the vein, and it will disappear.
What is Foam Sclerotherapy?
Foam sclerotherapy is one of the relatively new varicose vein treatment options. Foam
sclerotherapy involves the mixing of sotradecol solution with air or in our practice,
carbon dioxide, to produce foam. The reason for this is that foam solution tends to stick
more to the vein wall than the liquid sotradecol thus producing better results. This can
then be used to treat some of the larger underlying abnormal veins (reticular &
perforator) that would not normally be treated with conventional sclerotherapy.
Most patients are happy with this form of treatment as it is affordable and allows for the
best possible cosmetic results.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
It varies depending on each case, but the procedure usually requires three different
sessions. Each session is separated by four weeks and takes about fifteen minutes to
complete as it concentrates entirely on treating only one-half of the hand at a time. The
final session is used to retouch any areas that are still troublesome if they exist.
Will I Need to Set Aside Any Time for Recovery?
You will be able to resume your daily activities right away. The one drawback is that
gloves will be required for at least two weeks after each session.
