When it comes to golf in Hawaii you can’t go wrong with any of the four main islands – each island has something great to offer. We are making the case for ‘The Gathering Place’s’ best golfing locations. On Oahu, even a bad game of golf is still an incredible experience. You can have the Koolau mountains in your sightline, palm trees lining the green, and a white golf ball popping against the deep blue sky.
Oahu has more golf courses than any other island, so golfers of every skill level from around the world come here. There are 40 public and private courses to choose from, ranging from casual municipal links to elegant resort courses. Stunning scenery awaits you no matter which course you decide to tee it up on. If you want to watch the professionals play, Oahu hosts the PGA TOUR’s Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club every January.
Whether you are coming to play golf while on vacation or looking for the best courses while on your staycation, we have Oahu’s best golfing locations narrowed down for you.
Turtle Bay Resort
Turtle Bay is home to two spectacular Oahu golf courses designed by some of the most prominent names in golf and architecture.
- Arnold Palmer Course – Consistently regarded as the best course on Oahu (and among the very best on all the islands), the Palmer Course is an absolute must-play. Set along Hawaii’s fabled North Shore, this course of choice and has been named by Golf Digest as among the “Top 100 Public Courses in the US” and of the “75 Greatest Golf Resorts in the World.”
- George Fazio Course – The Fazio design is more forgiving than the Palmer Course. The walker-friendly layout meanders among traditional Hawaiian Palms while skirting the North Shore on numerous occasions. The Fazio Course holds its own as a classic Hawaiian golf experience and is perfect for those enjoying multiple days at the resort.
Makaha Resort and Golf Club
Makaha Valley Country Club in Waianae sprawls across scenic lowlands that look across stunning vistas. Nestled in its namesake valley, the golf course has a rolling terrain that is abundant with mature trees, ferns, and tropical plants. William Bell designed this 7,077-yard par 72 in a valley that once served as the playground of Hawaiian royalty.
Ko’olau Golf Club
Tropical splendor stars at Ko’olau Golf Club in eastern Oahu, which has a slope rating of 152. The Dick Nugent-designed course encompasses three distinct climate zones and is carved out of a tropical rain forest. The course, located on the side of a mountain range, features winding ravines, elevation changes and picturesque views of waterfalls.
Royal Hawaiian Golf Club – Once a private Japanese club, this Kailua course is the first co-designed by Perry Dye and his father, world-renowned golf architect Pete Dye. The back nine builds to an exciting finish as it winds through leafy corridors; players are presented with tantalizing risk-reward scenarios, exemplified by the 386-yard par-four 6th and the 218-yard par-3 7th. A remote course, locals refer to Royal Hawaiian as “Jurassic Park” because there are few signs of civilization. Golfers will have plenty of beautiful scenery to admire.
Ewa Beach Golf Club – A plush paspalum course designed by prolific Hawaii designer Robin Nelson, this well-kept secret hiding at the far end of the Ewa plains is always kept in premium shape with some of the best greens and fairways on the island of Oʻahu. The layout is reminiscent of a traditional Scottish links golf course and features rolling fairways, water hazards, and numerous bunkers strategically placed throughout.
Royal Kunia Country Club – This Robin Nelson designed golf course boasts a reputation as one of the best and most scenic courses on Oahu. The course is perched high above the Ewa plain, offering panoramic views of the entire South Shore, stretching from Pearl Harbor to the downtown skyline of Honolulu to the famed Diamond Head.
It is almost always a good time to go golfing on the island of Oahu, and no other island has as many golf courses or as much variety. Even though there are plenty of golf resorts on the island, there are also plenty of excellent daily-fee courses, which are often far less expensive than the resort courses on the other islands. This gives the golfer the best of both worlds.
